A recurring theme in my coming novel The Voting Machine is the idea of elections as a market place where the global elite invest in candidates the same way they do in stocks, bonds and other commodities.
One of the sub-plots deals with a fictional billionaire casino owner pouring money into Congressional candidates in exchange for voting "the right way" on Israel.
Given that sub-text, it's interesting to see this report about Sheldon Adelson pressuring Mitt Romney on the release of a Israeli spy. This is just a report and hasn't been substantiated to my knowledge. But it is interesting to ponder how far billionaire donors will push an explicit quid pro quo exchanging campaign money for policy commitments.
